Metformin HCl is an antidiabetic drug which belongs to the class of drug called biguanidine. Simple and new visible spectrophotometric methods are developed for the determination of metformin HCl (MET) in pure form and in pharmaceutical formulations. Selective visible spectrophotometric methods are developed by the formation of colored complex. Method is mainly based on the reaction of drug and metal ions like Co(II) sulphate and Cu(II) chloride. The maximum absorption wavelength is 518 nm for Co(II)-MET complex and 660 nm for Cu(II)-MET complex. Optimum conditions for complex formation are studied and optimized to obtain highest absorbance. Statistical comparison of the results is performed with regard to accuracy and precision using student’s t and F tests at 95% confidence level. Results allow the application of developed methods for the analysis of MET in pure form and in commercial tablets.
