Abstract

Human serum albumin is the circulating protein which is synthesized in liver. It undergoes various
modifications in its properties in type II diabetic patients. There is alteration in N-terminal which leads
to its reduced binding to other metals and is known as Ischemia Modified Albumin which can be
measured by the albumin cobalt binding assay which is based on the fact that IMA has reduced
capacity to bind cobalt as compared to Albumin. IMA is a proven marker for cardiovascular diseases.
It produces reactive oxygen species and is also a common risk factor for cardiovascular events.
Measuring its levels in type II Diabetes Mellitus may help to predict the status of complications
associated with it.
