Abstract

The advancement in analytical technology opens the doors for unexplored arena in the plant kingdom to identify new natural medicines which can serve as a potential alternate resource of synthetic molecules for the medical fraternity. The plant Cyphostemma setosum (Roxb.) is reported to have antinociceptive activity, antimicrobial activity, antidiabetic activity, antiulcer activity, and antioxidant activity. The present work demonstrates the invitro anticancer activity of Cyphostemma setosum (Roxb.) in human colon cancer HT29 cell lines using MTT assay. The MTT is a dye and is chemically known as 3[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide. The anticancer activity was measured and reported as Cell Viability %. The ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions of the ethanolic extracts of the leaves of C. setosum (Roxb) were used for the studies. The observations made during this study was evident enough in concluding the concentration based anticancer activity or increase in % cell death of both the tested fractions, while the ethyl acetate fraction is exhibiting predominant cytotoxic activity than the aqueous fraction. The maximum % Cell death exhibited by ethyl acetate fraction is 88.58 % (% Cell viability - 11.42%) at a maximum concentration 250 µg/mL. The maximum % Cell death exhibited by aqueous fraction is 74.82 % (% Cell viability – 25.28%) at a maximum concentration 250 µg/mL.
