Abstract

Objective: This research work depicts the in-vitro antioxidant activity of leaves extracts from Naringi crenulata (Roxb.) Nicolson.

Materials and Methods: The leaves of Naringi crenulata (Roxb.) Nicolson was extracted with solvents like petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol. Then a part of methanol extract was further partitioned using ethylacetate to get ethylacetate fractions. The phytochemical screening was done on all the extracts to analyze its phytoconstituents. The chloroform, methanol extracts and ethylacetate fractions of the herb were exposed to various in –vitro antioxidant assay methods such as DPPH scavenging assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, nitric oxide radical scavenging assay, metal chelating assay, reducing power assay, superoxide scavenging assay and ABTS radical scavenging assay in the concentrations from 5-640 µg/mL. Ascorbic acid (AA) was used as the standard.

Results: The phytoconstituents which were prominent in the phytochemical screening for MENC includes flavonoids, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, proteins and alkaloids. From the results of in-vitro antioxidant study it was evident that with increased concentration of extracts the scavenging property and the percentage inhibition also increased but there was a decline in its 1C50 value. This is the unique feature of any medicinal plant extracts with efficient antioxidant property. Moreover the maximum scavenging effect was observed for MENC (Methanolic extract of Naringi crenulata (Roxb.) Nicolson leaves. Thereby this extract was found to be effective when compared with others.

Conclusion: The results revealed that the extracts of Naringi crenulata (Roxb.) Nicolson leaves has significant antioxidant properties due to its scavenging activity.
