Abstract

This study examined the patterns of relationship between the staff and management of Colleges of education in Osun State and investigated the relationship between motivational strategies (increase in salary, promotion and good welfare packages) employed by the College management and job performance of staff members. It also determined the relationship between staff management modes such as effective communication open door policy and staff support, and staff job performance. These were with a view to determining job performance enhancement variables of staff in Osun State Colleges of education.The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population consisted of 994 academic and non-teaching staff of the two government-owned Colleges of education in Osun State. The sample comprised 117 (31%) academic staff and 152 (25%) non-teaching staff who were proportionatelysampled in the study. Two instruments were used to collect data for the study. These were Management Relations and Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (MRAJSQ), used to collect data on patterns of interaction between the staff and management of Colleges of education in Osun State and Motivation and Job Performance Questionnaire (MAJPQ) which was used to collect data on motivational strategies employed by the College managements. The instruments wereself-developed. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Statistics. The results showed that there was cordial and filial interaction between the staff and management of Colleges of education in Osun State as 50.4%, 43.6% and 6.0% of the respondents indicated that the relationship between staff and management of Colleges of education in Osun State was characterized by effective communication, staff support and open door policy respectively. The result also showed that a significant relationship existed between motivational strategiesemployed by the college management and job performance of staff members (r = 0.032, p< 0.05). However, there was no significant relationship between staff management modes and staff job performance (r = 0.097, p >0.05). The study concluded that effective communication and motivational strategies enhanced staff job performance in Osun State Colleges of Education.
